Want to give your spouse the best annivesary present? And it’s free? Are these thoughts going through your mind: What does my wife want? What can I get her this year that will be different from last year’s roses and chocolates and Hallmark card? If you don’t have a huge budget to buy your wife a tennis bracelet, this gift will make her feel like the luckiest woman in the world. Take it from me, I am a wife and have enjoyed this gift immensely for the last three years! I am also very vocal, so I told my husband exactly what I wanted. As we were both just starting out, I knew we weren’t able to afford expensive gifts and I’d rather be frugal with my money.
So I told him I wanted a book. But not one you can buy off Amazon or in Barnes and Noble, but one he wrote himself. I asked him to document every month of the last year and put it together in a long letter for me. Even just 5 sentences per month makes a sweet paragraph and summary, multiply that by 12 months and you have 60 sentences. Easily a beautiful short story of you and your wife’s last year together. I always enjoy reading how he has viewed the year, and what has been important for him.
So as a husband, put a quick reminder on your phone to jot down 5 sentences at the end of the month. This should not take more than 15 minutes. Keep it on a Google Doc or Word file on your computer and add to it every month. At the end of the year, you’ll have your gift ready for your wife. Print it out on cardstock and wrap it with a bow. She will be extremely surprised and you’ll see the tears well up in her eyes as she reads your story. Do this every year, and in a few years you’ll have a beautiful love story that you can share when you are old and gray, or even gift to your children as they grow up.
I normally ask my hubby for the electronic copy so I can make a Shutterfly book with our story. I add the pictures, he contributes all the text, and voila, our year is forever recorded! What a beautiful collaboration of our love to each other. I’m sappy, I know. But I’m still head over heels in love with him!
Here are the two books he wrote for me and I put together in a Shutterfly book. I’m still working on converting the last one into a book.
And here are a few of my favorite excerpts from last year’s book!
“June 9th was a magical evening. We laid down to sleep and discussed the chances that the next day would be the day…… Sure enough, that night you started slight contractions. Hooray! An opportunity to call in from work! I mean, I’m almost a DADDY!”
“I must have cried 10 times during that next hour, when she would grab my finger, when I was able to carry her, there was just so much beauty in that moment as I found out the type of father I would be: the overly proud, emotional, and loving type that knows without a doubt that I have the most amazing child in the entire world.”
Now wouldn’t a sentence like that make a girl completely melt?!
“We also got to celebrate your birthday this month, and got to enjoy a lovely dinner with together with us both dressed to the 9! You were stunning in your red dress, and turned the heads of everyone who saw you.”
Mention how beautiful she was on particular special event, or how much you liked something she did. Trust me, she will be stunned you remembered and that you wrote it down!
Well, that’s it! Write down a few sentences a month, compile it together before your anniversary and wrap it in a big red bow. If she doesn’t like it, I’ll refund your printing costs and pay for your dinner!
Let me know if you have any questions on how to make a Shutterfly book, I’d be happy to help!
